fish cake
Thai Fish Cakes

I had been really caught up with work lately and trying to make a come back on posting can be really a tough thing to do. As usually I can’t get things done at home, not sure why. But I am back at lower gear mode but I am sure by the end of the day I will be fine. A comeback kid. Last night had a great bit at Popeye’s and tried their newly launched sitcky wicked chicken while having a great company of an awesome host Klieo. Well back to my discovery of food in Kepong, I was introduce to this restaurant by blogger Chasing Food Dreams. This foodie got hooked and I was requested to tagged a long on their second round. My verdict, Yee Wee Thai Restaurant was really good and inspiring.

For example Yee Wen’s Fish Cake was truly pleasant to look and created such an appealing feast to begin with. I find it truly refined the way the fish cakes are done. It was filled with fresh fish paste, not over powering Thai red curry and diced long beans. Texture was great, not too rubbery, biting into the crunchy long beans makes the dish even more exciting. I had it slamped with the Thai chilli sauce and we had one large piece each.

white tom yum
Yee Wen White Tom Yum

My eyes bulged upon the arriving of the next dish, the White Tom Yum. For a second I thought I was living and dining in a primitive environment. Well, never a second I thought the soup would be served in a small typical handmade claypot over a life burning charcoal. It was so exciting and beautiful to see, truly rustic. I loved the clear white Tom Yum, tastily prepared. The soup was immersed with fresh herbs such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leafs and lime juice. Sipping a spoon of this warm soup can set your appetite right away. It was very appealingly good. Done to my liking and taste.

raw prawn salad
Kerabu Raw Prawns

Now I was intigged with the next ssalad/kerabu dish. Everything on the plate was raw, from fresh vegetable to the meat. We had the Raw Prawn Kerabu/Salad. The dish consisted of finely chopped white cabbage, thinly sliced carrot, raw prawns, chopped garlic, chopped chillies and calintro. My verdict: It was an exciting experience. Great freshness of the prawns and had a fabulous biting texture. Love the combination of garlic, chilli and white cabbage. Yet foremost was their sweet sour lime dressing. It was truly a killer. Truly got me hooked!

otak-otak
Coconut Otak-Otak

I was so pleased with the next coconut dish. I use to have them filled with curried prawns but here at Yee Wen I had it filled with Otak-otak or steam curried egg custrad filled with assorted seafood such as prawns, squid and sliced fish fillet. Interesting taste infused through it’s preparation using the coconut serving. Fragrant as one can easily imagine while the texture of the egg custard had tempted me like a devil! Intrigged.

deep fried crispy chicken
Deep Fried Chicken with Thai Fresh Herbs

For a second I thought I had deep fried Grasshoppers. But it was not, I felt rather let down for a second. Well we ordered a deep fried chicken with lemongrass and kaffir lime leafs. They were very well deep fried till slightly dark brown. The chicken was interesting in taste and my dining neighbour kept telling me even I though it was slightly dry. The lemongrass was deep fried ill crisp and tasted rather interestingly good and looked like deep fried grasshopper.

green curry
Green Curry

The Green Curry Chicken was another deliciously prepared dish using fresh pounded herbs. It was prepared as the Thai version as the sauce was not overly thicken. The sauce went very well with my white rice.

steamed lime fish
Lime Steamed Red Mullet

I just love having Steamed Lime Fish whenever I drop by a Thai restaurant. At Yee Wen I did the same but this time I had it with Red Mullet fish. It was something different. I love the texture and freshness of the fish. It was compact with such a great biting taste. As for the sauce I felt it was slightly overpowering with lime juice but it still manage to fulfill my desire. Nice!

venue

Yee Wen is just a simple rustic sresturant and had been hidden from me for more than five years and I found it . . . . .. . . . . a lovely experience, Sidney Kan
